We agree that during the training of AI, writers’ work has been exploited without consent. We back all attempts by writers to seek redress and, once our platform has reached sufficient scale, we aim to help fund the fight.
However, we are also realistic. Whether writers like it or not, AI has already learned from their work and has moved on. This is the reality. No matter how angry we may be that this has happened, there is no way back—but there is a way forward.
Every transformation comes with a choice: shape the solution, or accept one that leaves us behind. We choose to influence the solution from within, ensuring that readers, writers, and publishers are—and remain—part of the conversation and part of the AI value chain.
We will work towards the pursuit of an ethical AI that is owned and directed by the creative community. This is a far more legitimate motive than using it to find new ways to generate profit. It means that in the future, our community will have control over how AI is trained, how it is used, and how it compensates those whose work it has learned from.
We will build our ethical approach to AI into the very core of our platform. Blockchain technology has the power to prevent unauthorized use of written work for training AI, and we want future industry standards, policies, and legal frameworks to place this protection right at the heart of the literary world.
