Susan has a B.A. in Chemistry and in Biology from UC Santa Cruz and received her Ph.D. from UC Santa Barbara working as a joint graduate student of Drs. John Carbon and Leslie Wilson. Her doctoral work focused on yeast tubulin and kinetochores. Susan was a post-doc at the Plant Gene Expression Center at the USDA, working with Dr. David Ow and at UC Berkeley, working with Dr. Wilhelm Gruissem. Susan held a senior scientist position at XOMA corporation and then moved into intellectual property, working with the Chicago law firm, McAndrews, Held, and Malloy, and later with Novartis. She joined Sangamo Therapeutics and served as the Senior Director of Intellectual Property for over a decade. Susan joined the IGI in June of 2019 as the Director of Intellectual Property to develop and manage IGI’s patent estate.
